A FUSION INVESTIGATES SPECIAL - ‘Pimp City: A Journey to the Center of the Sex Slave Trade’

A Fully Immersive, Interactive Digital Report to Debut Alongside the One-Hour Expose Hosted by Fusion’s Mariana van Zeller Airing Sunday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m., ET on Fusion

Sex slaves are the “product” trafficked by the fastest growing illegal industry in the world. Girls as young as 12 are plucked from their homes and sent to the U.S.by a shadowy network that has spread across the country. “In the US, we fought wars to end slavery, but it continues, worse than ever. As an American, I am ashamed,“ Loretta Lynch, US Attorney Eastern District New York, tells Fusion. As authorities struggle to keep up with the explosion in sex trafficking to the U.S., Fusion takes you on a journey from America’s secret neighborhood brothels, to the remote city that trafficks more sex slave to the US, than anyplace else.

Fusion Correspondent Mariana van Zeller and her team of female producers fearlessly trace the journey of one trafficked girl from Queens, New York back to the dangerous Mexican city of Tenancingo, where boys as young as 12 are taught how to pimp. The locals make it very clear they are not welcome.  In a gripping, interview van Zeller finally confronts the girl’s incarcerated pimp.

Fusion’s first-ever cross-platform investigative documentary combines a television special with an immersive digital experience to expose the hidden sex slave trade that’s spreading across the country.

The Fusion Investigates primetime special “Pimp City: A Journey to the Center of the Sex Slave Trade” will air Sunday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m., ET on Fusion. On Monday, June 16 Fusion will debut an engaging visual and interactive feature at Fusion.net/PimpCity that will delve deeper into the frightening sex slave trade that has crept into America’s cities and towns.

“Pimp City” was reported by Mariana van Zeller, produced by Alice Brennan with Cristina Costantini. Keith Summa served as executive producer.

Fusion CEO Highlights ‘Exceptional’ Week for New Network, Says Network’s Partnerships Shone During International Coverage

image

During the past week ABC News coverage of two key events has benefited from extensive reporting done by its sister network Fusion – the ongoing deadly protests in Venezuela and the capture of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Segments of Fusion’s original documentary “El Chapo: CEO of Crime” aired on several ABC broadcasts and Fusion’s Investigative Reporter Mariana van Zeller contributed to ABC News’ coverage throughout the weekend appearing on “World News,“ “Good Morning America,” and “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” With young Venezuelans taking to the streets to protest the administration of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Fusion anchor Mariana Atencio, who spent the past week reporting from Caracas, reported for “World News with David Muir” and contributed to ABC News Digital coverage last week. In addition, Fusion’s coverage of both stories was featured across ABC’s digital platforms including the homepage of ABCNews.com.

Conversely, Fusion leveraged the global resources of ABC News to cover the unrest in Kiev, Ukraine.  ABC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Terry Moran appeared last week on Fusion’s “AMERICA with Jorge Ramos.”

Fusion CEO outlined this in an email to the Fusion staff on Monday.  See the stories from TV Newser and The Huffington Post below for more –

Fusion’s Chief Investigative Reporter Mariana Van Zeller Hosts a Riveting Special Tonight, February 22 at 8:00 p.m., ET on Fusion

Fusion will air “El Chapo: CEO of Crime Captured” tonight, February 22 at 8:00 p.m., ET. Encore broadcasts of the Fusion documentary will air throughout the weekend. As elusive as he is powerful, Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been practically invisible and unreachable since his escape from a Mexican federal prison – until now. After a search that lasted over a decade, El Chapo was detained today by Mexican and U.S. authorities. Hosted by Fusion’s Chief Investigative Reporter Mariana van Zeller, “El Chapo: CEO of Crime” – based on a Univision News investigation – explores the life of one of the world’s most mysterious drug lords.

He has been one of the world’s most wanted criminals and wields unimaginable power as the top leader of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, the drug trafficking organization that dominates the sale of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamines throughout the Western Hemisphere. Univision News’ award-winning Investigative Unit followed the trail of the infamous Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as “El Chapo Guzmán” (Shorty Guzmán), taking its cameras to Mexico, Europe and Asia, interviewing over one hundred people on both sides of the law, and obtaining access to numerous official documents in an attempt to paint a clearer picture of this ruthless and enigmatic drug lord.

His expansive criminal activities are well documented, as the violent cartel he controls traffics thousands of tons of illegal drugs across Europe and the Americas and is considered responsible for digging over 120 tunnels along the U.S. Mexican border, used to smuggle drugs in and cash out. The extent of Guzmán’s vast personal fortune is undetermined, but it is estimated that his drug-related fortune could surpass $10 billion per year.

During an in-depth investigation that lasted eight months, Univision’s reporters traveled to key international locations – ranging from the kingpin’s hometown in Mexico to several port cities in Spain – to conduct exclusive interviews and view dozens of official court documents. They spoke with agents and informants from anti-narcotics agencies, journalists, biographers, Mexican and Guatemalan government officials, and former members of the drug trade who collaborated with Guzmán in the past.
