Jorge Ramos to GOP on Immigration: “Hispanics Will Remember This Moment’ in 2016

When Republican leaders in the House of Representatives put forth their guiding principles for immigration reform some reform advocates were optimistic a bill would reach the president’s desk. Then Speaker Boehner threw cold water on the issue saying his caucus was unlikely to move forward due to a lack of trust in President Obama.

Jorge Ramos, host of “AMERICA with Jorge Ramos” on Fusion, as well as various news programs on Univision, joined Jeremy Hobson of NPR’s “Here & Now” to discuss the developments, listen below –

RAMOS: It seems that they did this political calculation that they can wait. They can wait until next year or maybe 2016 for immigration reform. What they have to know is that Latinos will remember and that they will blame Republicans. And if they continue doing this, and blocking immigration reform, Republicans will lose again the White House in 2016.

HOBSON: But they seemed to have made the calculation that they’re better off - or at least some Republicans have made the calculation that they’re better off not passing it than passing it.

RAMOS: Exactly. I understand that. But I think they’re wrong. I think - their talking points right now as you - as we listen to John Boehner and other Republicans, is that President Barack Obama is to blame for not having immigration reform. And we called on President Barack Obama for not keeping his promise in year 2009. But that was 2009. 2014, Republicans are to blame. If Speaker John Boehner wants to bring immigration reform to a vote, he can do it. He can do it tomorrow. But he simply won’t do it.

It seems that they really don’t get it. They don’t understand that the Hispanic community is growing, that in 2016, 16 million voters will go to the polls, that, really, Republicans’ future depends on the Hispanic vote and that before Latinos will really take another look on Republicans, they have to resolve immigration. But they simply are not taken seriously. And again, I think Hispanics will remember this moment.

On Politics

"They think they can hide, and they can do politically expedient things like not putting immigration reform to a vote, but Latinos will remember that,” Ramos said of Republicans in Congress. “They have a problem, if they don’t pass immigration reform they can say ‘Adios’ to the White House in 2016.”

“George Bush, of course, was the first U.S. president who thought that he spoke Spanish. But…it helped him,” Jorge joked.

The premiere of “AMERICA with Jorge Ramos” on Fusion featured an exclusive interview with President Obama.  The interview, conducted by White House Correspondent and ABC News Senior National Correspondent Jim Avila, took place this afternoon.

Jim Avila: Alright, so, Mr. President, let me ask you first about the news of the day: the National Security Administration. People wonder, how is it you didn’t know about the cell phones being looked at or listened to, and why you didn’t know, and who should’ve told you?

President Obama: Well, first of all, I’m not confirming a bunch of assumptions that have been made in the press, but what I have said is that the national security operations generally, have one purpose, and that is to make sure the American people are safe and that I’m making good decisions, and I’m the final user of all the intelligence that they gather. But they’re involved in a whole wide range of issues, and we give them policy direction, but what we’ve seen over the last several years is their capacities continue to develop and expand, and that’s why I’m initiating now a review to make sure that what they’re able to do doesn’t necessarily mean what they should be doing.

Jim Avila: So would we assume from that answer, sir, that you did or would know, you would know if actually that was happening?
