Launch of Fusion Named One of the Biggest Media Stories of 2013
The launch of Fusion has been named one of the biggest media stories of 2013 by both Politico and TV Newser.
Politico’s Dylan Byers and Hadas Gold write the following under the headline “ABC News and Univision bid for Hispanics” –
“Fusion,” the new ABC News-Univision joint-venture, launched this year with the express interest of courting an English-speaking Hispanic audience. According to a recent Pew survey, 82 percent of Hispanic adults get their news in English — a promising sign for the still-nascent Miami-based network, which counts Alicia Menendez (daughter of Sen. Robert Menendez) and Univision vet Jorge Ramos among its primetime hosts.
Fusion’s political relevance rests on Ramos, a host who has shown no qualms about pressing politicians on the issues that matter to the Latino community. In an interview with Obama (for Univision) he told the president point-blank that he had failed to keep some of his promises. After grilling Rahm Emanuel, Ramos picked up a rare endorsement from the highly influential conservative Matt Drudge, who called Ramos “the last journalist standing.”
