Fusion Debuts Nationwide on DISH

DISH expanded its programming lineup with the addition of Fusion (channel 244) today.  

“Through its television and digital properties, Fusion speaks to a diverse new generation across all DISH customers,” said Alfredo Rodriguez, vice president of marketing for DISH. “DISH’s overall lineup is greatly enhanced by Fusion, helping us to better connect with an important viewing demographic that is an increasingly influential member of today’s marketplace.”

“Fusion is committed to delivering content that champions a diverse, smart, and inclusive America through programming that is infused with humor, diverse voices, and many viewpoints,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee. “We are thrilled to be partnering with DISH to bring our unique content offering to a larger audience.”

Subscribers to America’s Top 250 packages and higher will see Fusion in their lineup as well as subscribers in most DishLATINO packages. Fusion On Demand will also be available in the coming week.

Fusion was recognized with two awards in the last week – a Telly Award for the WISDOM project and a PromaxBDA award for the network’s graphics. Fusion CEO sent the following email to staff congratulating them –

In addition, our graphics team has been recognized by their peers in the industry for creating a graphics package for Fusion that is innovative in its design. That recognition comes in the form of a PromaxBDA bronze award for Art Direction and Design in the news program graphics category. Michael Berkman and his team were singled out for the branding of “AMERICA with Jorge Ramos,” which utilized a number of unconventional approaches that helped us avoid the trappings of traditional tv news. For example, “AMERICA” is the first news program to align its graphics on a vertical axis with multiple streams of information scrolling along the left and right – more closely mirroring the experience we all have of scrolling and swiping on our smartphones. It is small details like this that help to give us a distinct, bold look on air.

The Howler’s George Quraishi Joins as Fusion’s Senior Editor of World Cup Coverage Delivering the Ultimate Second-Screen Experience with Live Coverage of Matches Plus the Sights, Sounds, and Parties From Across Brazil

As the world converges on Brazil, Fusion is proud to announce a fully immersive World Cup experience to viewers across its television, digital, and social platforms. Fusion goes inside the World Cup with “The Soccer Gods” primetime coverage live from Brazil seven nights a week.  Fans of all ranges will be able to stay connected while on-the-go via a special second-screen, digital destination: soccer.fusion.net. ​

Fusion’s mobile-responsive microsite creates and curates a tapestry of content from the social web that includes reactions from fans and key influencers watching from inside the stadiums, parties in Brazil and beyond. “The Soccer Gods: Brazil 2014” will anchor Fusion’s coverage of the tournament in primetime beginning Wednesday, June 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) and continuing for every night of the tournament. “Soccer Gods” hosts Nando Vila and Simon Carr will deliver their unique, irreverent, nuanced perspective on the world of soccer from the heart of the action – Copacabana Beach. The one-hour show will feature a distinctive recap of the day’s matches, reaction from ESPN’s powerhouse team of experts, celebrity guests, as well as nightly features on the culture and party atmosphere in Brazil, plus reports from wherever the news breaks throughout the tournament. “The Soccer Gods” will be live-streamed each night on Fusion.net’s desktop and mobile platforms. Fusion will have members of its team covering all angles of the World Cup for its broadcasts and platforms including:

George Quraishi, the co-founder and editor of the popular soccer quarterly Howler, has joined Fusion as Senior Editor of the network’s World Cup coverage. The New York Times called the Howler “the best expression of the state of soccer in America right now.” In addition to Quraishi, a team of writers will be contributing to Fusion’s coverage including the co-founder of Church of Soccer Corey Bennett as well as Miriti Murungi, Noah Davis, Dermot Corrigan, James Young, Nooruddean Choudry, Tom Dart, Michael Agovino among others.

Pedro Andrade will bring Fusion extraordinary access to people, places, and culture of Brazil during one of the world’s largest celebrations of sport. Andrade will co-host "Fusion LIVE” (weeknights, 8:00 p.m., ET) from Brazil. The Brazilian native has achieved notoriety in his home country as the anchor of Manhattan Connection, which is one of the most-watched shows in Brazil reaching an estimated 8.5 million viewers; it is aired nationally in 5 different countries and on cable worldwide.

Fusion's Jorge Ramos and Leon Krauze will contribute to Fusion’s coverage throughout the games in addition to reporting for “Noticias Univision” and KMEX respectively.

Fusion Investigative Correspondent Mariana van Zeller will examine topics ranging from the drug wars happening in the Amazon to Brazilians who are protesting due to bad public services, high cost of living, government corruption and what they see as excessive spending on mega events like the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

“The World Cup is truly a global coming together of culture and sport. Fusion will not only deliver the must-see highlights and in-depth analysis for soccer fans, but will take you off the field to experience the infectious sights, rhythms and parties happening across Brazil” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee. “The World Cup will be the ultimate multiplatform event so for 30 days the World Cup party will be non-stop on Fusion – on television, on mobile, on social.”

Fusion will leverage the assets of its dynamic parent companies Disney/ABC and Univision throughout the tournament; ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, has the English-language rights to the World Cup, while Univision has the Spanish language rights. Anchors and analysts from both organizations will contribute to Fusion’s coverage.

Jane Spencer Joins Fusion as Editor-in-Chief for Digital Platforms

Fusion CEO Isaac Lee today announced that award-winning journalist Jane Spencer is joining Fusion as Editor-in-Chief of the network’s digital platforms. Spencer was among the founding editors of The Daily Beast and has also worked at The Wall Street Journal. Lee sent the following email to staff this afternoon –

Over the past several months we have been very fortunate to have. a number of talented, innovative thinkers join the ranks of our digital team… from Anna Holmes and Felix Salmon to Hong Qu and Mariana Santos.

Today I am thrilled to add another name to that list – Jane Spencer, who will be leading Fusion’s editorial efforts across all digital platforms as our Editor in Chief.

Jane is an award-winning journalist who brings an extensive record of innovation and journalistic excellence, with a keen sense of the issues that matter most to our audience. Jane’s enthusiasm is contagious and she has the proven ability to build a startup into a thriving editorial operation, which will help take Fusion to the next level.

Jane was one of the founding editors of The Daily Beast, where she served as managing editor and executive editor until 2012. That year, she was awarded a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, where she studied new directions in digital storytelling at MIT Media Lab as well as entrepreneurship and online business models at Harvard Business School.

During her tenure as executive editor at The Daily Beast, the site’s traffic doubled while also winning numerous awards, including a National Magazine Award Digital Ellie, a Webby Award for Best News Site, and a Front Page Award for multimedia storytelling.

Before joining The Daily Beast in 2008, Jane was a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong and New York where she covered a variety of beats from the entertainment industry to reporting on environmental issues and technology. She was part of a team of reporters that won a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2007 for coverage of China’s public health and environmental problems.

Most recently, Jane has been working on digital innovation at The Wall Street Journal and consulting on the launch of The Marshall Project, a non-profit newsroom devoted to covering the criminal justice system.

Jane’s distinct voice, passion, and editorial perspective will be a tremendous asset to us all as we look to inform and empower our young, diverse audience with content that is smart, inclusive, authentic, and entertaining.

Jane starts July 3rd and will be based here at Newsport.  Please join me in welcoming her to our team.

Fusion CEO Isaac Lee to Bloomberg TV: ‘We want to be a brand that lives wherever the audience is going to live’

While at the Aspen Ideas Festival Fusion CEO Isaac Lee spoke to Bloomberg TV about the network’s approach, its audience and its point of view. “Fusion TV seems like an idea whose time should have come many years ago,” Bloomberg anchor Erik Schatzker said. 

“I don’t know why it took so long – beats me, but it makes a lot of sense,” Lee said. “There are 77 million millennials now and 20-25% of them are Hispanics, it is an undeniable growth… what you cannot do is take away the fact that the influence of Hispanics in this generation is huge.”
When asked about Fusion’s approach to reaching millennials Lee said: “We don’t just have linear TV. Fusion is a media brand. Our efforts in mobile are huge. In digital are huge. We want to be a brand that lives wherever the audience is going to live… at the end of the day, they do watch television that is relevant to them.”

FUSION Recognized with Polk Award for Contributions to Historic Panama Papers Investigation

Long Island University (LIU) has recognized FUSION, along with the partner organizations working with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, with a George Polk Award for its reporting on the Panama Papers. The investigation is being recognized in the financial journalism category. 

The Panama Papers marks one of the largest investigations in journalism history with more than 100 media partners and 400 journalists collaborating on the reporting. The papers are a trove of leaked documents from inside Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm that creates offshore companies to hide financial activities of the rich and powerful. A leak to Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung of 11.5 million documents involving 210,000 companies was shared with CPI’s International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which coordinated investigative work with media partners such as McClatchy, FUSION, The Guardian, Le Monde and others. As one of the few English-language partners in the United States,
