Fusion’s Alicia Menendez Reports on a Generation Displaced by Global Conflict, Fighting to Regain Their Future

Primetime Special “Generation in Crisis” Airs Wednesday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. on Fusion

From Syria to Central America, today one billion children are living in areas affected by war or conflict. In fact, the United Nations declared 2014 one of the worst years on record for the world’s children. After three-dozen interviews on three continents in three different languages, Fusion’s Alicia Menendez shines a light on the young adults, particularly women and children, who don’t have access to formal schooling, who are marrying off at younger ages, and who are becoming unexpected heads of households as they grapple with the violence that has engulfed their homes. Menendez explores the human impact of these conflicts and how resilience can be found in the most unexpected places. “Generation in Crisis” airs Wednesday, March 11 at 9:00 p.m. on Fusion.

With the conflict in Syria being the leading contributor of trauma to children in the world, Menendez traveled to the center of the humanitarian crisis, the Zaatari refugee camp in Northern Jordan, to speak to young Syrians who have been displaced from their homes. She also traveled to El Salvador to report on how the confluence of the drug trade, gang violence and lack of economic opportunity has led children to flee to the United States. Finally, Menendez found seeds of hope when she visited the city of Kigali in Rwanda to speak with young genocide survivors – hearing how they have rebuilt their lives and their country.
