Fusion Senior Editor Kevin Roose has been named to Forbes’ annual list of the 30 Under 30 in Media. In addition to writing for Fusion’s web platform he will be co-executive producing a series with Alexis Madrigal, Fusion’s Silicon Valley Bureau Chief, that “will explore different pockets of technology and futurism around the world.”

In a story headlined “Next Generation Network,” Hispanic Executive magazine spoke to Fusion’s Tania Linares about the company’s relevance to millennials and young Hispanics.
“Tania Linares is a millennial. She is associate general counsel and vice president of business affairs at the new TV network, Fusion. Linares sits down with Hispanic Executive to explain how the channel is bringing together news and pop culture to inform an educated, inclusive, and engaged generation," Michelle Markelz writes at the top of the piece.
Why is Fusion relevant to Hispanic millennials?
The most successful brands are linked to their consumers’ fundamental human values—the values that give meaning to their lives and express who they are and want to be. Fusion is the first network to reflect the values of the millennial generation, which is the most diverse generation in American history. We are aware that about one in five millennials are Hispanic, so when looking to serve this young generation, a natural entry point is to consider those who grew up with a Latino perspective.
I believe that in the coming years, especially as we get closer to 2016, when nearly all millennials will be eligible to vote, Fusion will take on an increased level of relevance. As we look to inform, empower, and inspire, Fusion will continually strive to leverage that power and give our audience a voice.

Jorge Urrutia, Fusion’s Vice President of Digital Monetization, was among the hundreds of digital media thought leaders who attended the Digiday Publishing Summit this week.
He was asked about the evolution of the digital media and was asked specifically about one major misconception people have about digital media today. He believes the biggest myth about digital media is “that the state of journalism is sad.” He explains below –

That the state of journalism is sad. That all we see is clickbait and misleading headlines on social media. My opinion is that there is a functional, and educational, and an emotional value to content. Journalists tend to care about the educational value the most, and as a result, they value long-form the most. But people, our audiences, need the three of them. Digital, and social networks, are amazing because they allow creators to come up with entirely new form factors to inform, like a simple tweet, to educate or to draw emotion. These form factors may require seconds or hours — it depends — but that does not make them any better or any worse from a “quality” standpoint. Quality should be defined as value to the audience!

While many news organizations and brands repackage content for social media, Fusion is among those getting into the business of platform-specific content. This month, Fusion launched a new Instagram series called “In Our Lifetime.” The series focuses on issues like elephants going extinct or computer-powered cars: the things we’re going to have to deal with in the future, basically.

The LA Times’ TV critic Robert Lloyd highlighted Fusion’s “No, You Shut Up!,” hosted by comedian Paul F. Tompkins, as one of his “Critic’s Picks” last week. Lloyd noted many of the show’s jokes “could play unaltered on Jon Stewart’s show.”
“No, You Shut Up!” (Fusion, Thursdays). Man-about-comedy Paul F. Tompkins is the host of this news-panel-parody puppet show, now in its third season. Produced by the Jim Henson Company, and created by former “Daily Show” head writer David Javerbaum, it’s a sort of cousin to that show filtered through “Captain Kangaroo,” with the half-urgent dreaminess of “Comedy Bang! Bang!” stirred in. Despite the title, the puppet-pundits – pupdits? – most of them animals but also including “actor, model and hot dog” Hot Dog, lunchbox Joe Lunchpail and Yerd Nerp, a one-eyed alien, are better-tempered than many of their human associates on self-styled real news shows. While at the Aspen Ideas Festival Fusion CEO Isaac Lee spoke to Bloomberg TV about the network’s approach, its audience and its point of view. “Fusion TV seems like an idea whose time should have come many years ago,” Bloomberg anchor Erik Schatzker said.
Long Island University (LIU) has recognized FUSION, along with the partner organizations working with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, with a George Polk Award for its reporting on the Panama Papers. The investigation is being recognized in the financial journalism category.
The Panama Papers marks one of the largest investigations in journalism history with more than 100 media partners and 400 journalists collaborating on the reporting. The papers are a trove of leaked documents from inside Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm that creates offshore companies to hide financial activities of the rich and powerful. A leak to Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung of 11.5 million documents involving 210,000 companies was shared with CPI’s International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which coordinated investigative work with media partners such as McClatchy, FUSION, The Guardian, Le Monde and others.
